11th Annual Literacy Trivia Bee & Silent Auction

The Adult Literacy Program needs your support! Please join us for an evening of friendly banter and bidding at the Upland Library Literacy Trivia Bee and Silent Auction, Thursday, March 29, 2012, 6 p.m., at the Carnegie Cultural Center, 123 D St. The $15 admission allows you to bid on a variety of prizes, cheer for your favorite trivia teams, and enjoy a light dinner and dessert. Sponsored by local businesses and community organizations, past silent auction prizes have included sporting events tickets, fine jewelry, and gift certificates to local spas and restaurants. Tickets go on sale Monday, March 1, at the Upland Library’s Circulation Desk. All proceeds benefit the Upland Library Adult Literacy Program, whose state funding is determined by the amount of local monies raised. To enter as a team the fee is $300 donation to the Literacy Program.

Seeking and Training Adult Literacy Tutors

Tutor Training ~ Saturday, April 14, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. ~ Carnegie Cultural Center, Upland To attend the training workshops for potential literacy tutors, please pre-register by Thursday, April 12, 5 p.m., with the Adult Literacy Program, (909) 931-4212. In this workshop, volunteers learn about instructional methods and materials for adult students.

10th Annual Literacy Trivia Bee & Silent Auction raises $4,673!

Dashing in his tuxedo, Master of Ceremonies Bob Cable of Cable Airport presided over an entertaining evening of brain teasers and tacos at the 10th Annual Literacy Trivia Bee & Silent Auction on April 28. Judges Tom Thomas and Dr. Loren Sanchez awarded points for correct answers, team flair, and fan support in the form of Bee Bucks. Congratulations to the returning champions, the Upland Highlanders, sponsored by Mrs. Kay Sanchez, for winning the 2011 Trivia Bee! Many thanks to the other contenders: Attitude Adjustment, sponsored by Dr. Kenneth Myers, San Antonio Chiropractic Center; The Solar Gods, sponsored by RCC Solar; The Thinking Crew of Upland’s Finance Dept. and The University of LaVerne Leopards, both sponsored by Interim City Manager Stephen Dunn.
